There's Always Another

Author: Meiran
E-Mail: chang_meiran@hotmail.com, chang_meiran@gundamwing.org
Disclaimer: If I owned Gundam Wing I would be busy making action figures instead of writing fic. There's Always Another is taken from a line in Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want"

"There's always another/wound to discover/there's always something more/you wish he'd say."

Warnings/Notes: There will be the following:
Heero and Duo in romantic situations
Trowa and Quatre in the same
An Original character
Relena-bashing to a degree
Violence if I can write it.
Limey-ness if I can write it
Way too many parts for my own good
Long gaps between parts because I'm slow.
Really big plot holes at the moment...

Still want to read?

There's Always Another
Part One

Wufei frowned as he looked across the dining hall. He understood the need to protect the head of state and as a Preventer, he understood the need to obey orders.

But it made him physically ill to be on this assignment. While he never enjoyed protecting "Princess Peacecraft," having to attend school in order to do it seemed not only well below his dignity but a trick of fate that could easily be attributed to a karmic debt he would gladly repay somewhere else.

While he slowly chewed the substance the school had declared lunch, he smiled smugly as his eyes fell on Heero and Duo across the dining hall. While it had been at Heero's insistence that the pair sit as far from Relena's typical table as his mission would allow, Duo had acquiesced quickly. Relena had slowly moved across the cafeteria day by day until the two pilots had been forced to relocate again.

Wufei chuckled slightly as he picked up a burger that he doubted contained real meat. Relena had not allowed Heero to keep a low profile, so he was not the most useful of undercover agents. But Sally Po had insisted all five former Gundam Pilots were needed, because "someone" wanted to do "something" to Relena-"sama" and her instinct was that it would be bad.

The former soldier glanced toward the food line at Quatre, who was chattering happily at the unsuspecting student who had accidentally gotten in line between the blond and Trowa. She turned slightly and smiled the barest of smiles. It was the kind of indulgent smile Trowa used when Quatre ran away with the conversation. As the group finished piling their trays with food, Quatre said something and the girl stopped and bit her lower lip. She looked to where he was gesturing.

For the first time in four years, Chang Wufei, pilot of Gundam Shenlong, Preventer and proud member of The Dragon Clan contemplated insubordination and skipping school.

He began to practically chant "not here, not here, not here, not here..." and closed his eyes before he let out the rest of his held breath. His karmic debt was much too large.

Quatre waved at Wufei as he sat down his tray. "Wufei!"

Couldn't that boy pronounce his name right? The cross teenager opened his eyes again, greeted by the site of a girl sitting her tray in front of him.

A girl. Just keep calling her a girl. He repeated, with a decisive nod to drive it home. He knew it wasn't true. He had known that when she had been introduced to his class. She had the same dark, fiery eyes and determined expression. Her hair was the same jet black, perhaps the same length. As she turned her head, he examined the tight curl of a bun that she always had her hair swept into.

"Why is she sitting here?" Wufei whispered to Trowa.

"I believe Quatre offered her a place to site because she's been eating by herself."

"Perhaps she wanted to be alone." Wufei mumbled. He considered to himself that it was unfair to hold her appearance against her. He studied her face as she studied her sandwich. He wasn't sure why he saw a resemblance. She was not Asian, and did not have the same youthful, round face. But the eyes. The resemblance in her eyes was enough to have brought back the nightmares that he had put aside so long ago. It had been two years since the first sleepless night, and he didn't enjoy their repeat performance.

She looked up from her sandwich and extended her hand, "Konnichiwa, watashe wa Kutsuko Rei."

He hesitantly took her hand. "Oira wa Wufei. Wufei Chang." Their eyes met.

Damn.

Wufei had to look away. He knew it was a sign of weakness, and he tried to pretend his half-eaten burger was much more interesting. Trowa blinked and looked at Quatre. Wufei cursed as he picked up the ill-fated burger. They had noticed. He looked around, trying to find anything to pretend that he found more interesting than her company. He looked towards Heero and Duo, seeing Relena march herself directly over to their table and take a seat. They weren't going to stay undercover for long if Relena had anything to do with it.

"Isn't she persistent." Kutsuko mused, following Wufei's gaze.

"What?" He blinked.

"Well, she's been practically following poor Yuy-san for a week and a half now, and he obviously doesn't want her around." She casually took a bite from her sandwich. "I suppose it's the idea that something isn't hers to control. Why is she in school anyway? Shouldn't she be off doing something political? Why doesn't she have a private tutor?"

Quatre frowned as he heard the disdain dripping from her voice. Wufei just made a small noise similar to "hn." It was actually a question he had been pondering lately, and he had asked Sally when she assigned him.

"Relena wants to be normal, to present an image that is of a person just like you or me running the government."

"I was privately tutored."

Sally had rolled her eyes and gestured at the door, and Wufei had almost sulked as he left.

"Rei-san..." Quatre's voice cut into Wufei's memory. "Have you ever met Relena-sama?"

Kutsuko did not have a chance to respond as Relena's voice cut across the room, "HEEERO!" All four turned to see what the commotion was about. In the corner, Heero was no where to be seen. Duo was standing to leave, as Relena threw a thoroughly aggravated look in his direction, "Where did he go Maxwell?"

They did not hear Duo's response, nor did Relena as she stormed out of the doors after her beloved. Kutsuko sighed, "She's never going to learn, is she?"

"Hn," Wufei turned back to his lunch, "You have no idea."

She sighed as she looked at the sparse meal on her plate, "I've lost my appetite. I'm so sorry minna-san." She took her tray and made her way out of the dining hall.

Quatre frowned and looked across the table at his friends, "Now that was weird, wasn't it?"

Trowa only nodded, Wufei snorted as he watched Kutsuko push open the doors to leave. "I don't believe weird describes it. Why in the world did you invite her over here?"

Quatre frowned, "She looked like she needed a friend, she's always by herself. I figured since we're new, and she's new..."

"We're on a mission Quatre, and if you've forgotten that means protecting her highness, not making friends." Wufei was glaring at the poor unsuspecting blond.

That is, he was glaring until he felt a firm hand on his shoulder, "Wufei," Trowa closed his eyes and spoke quietly. Wufei frowned and looked back at Quatre. "I'm sorry, I just..."

"Why don't you like her?" Trowa had turned back to his meal, but Wufei still felt like he was watching him.

"That obvious huh?"

"Horribly."

Wufei knew he couldn't hide from them, but he couldn't tell them either. How do you explain to someone that trusts you with their life that you haven't told them the most important event of your past? "She reminds me of someone."

"Someone you didn't get along with?"

Wufei blinked, Quatre seemed so genuinely concerned, "Actually, well...no. She was a member of my clan."

He heard Trowa inhale sharply. While his fellow pilots may not have known the events that led him to become a gundam pilot, they did know the fate that his clan had chosen. It was a subject that they rarely discussed and, as Wufei hoped, one that caused both Trowa and Quatre to leave him alone with his thoughts.
